We moved Città off a legacy Adobe and Microsoft Dynamics 365 setup onto Shopify Plus, rebuilding retail (DTC) and wholesale (B2B) into a single, ERP-integrated storefront across New Zealand, Australia and the United States - faster, easier to merchandise, and true to Città's considered, design-led aesthetic.

Città is one of New Zealand's most recognisable design brands - furniture, lighting, textiles and homewares, sold direct to customers and wholesale to a network of trade partners. Its digital home, though, was carrying two jobs on ageing rails: a legacy Adobe storefront bolted onto Microsoft Dynamics 365, with a flat, variant-less product model that broke search, muddied pricing and made everyday merchandising slow going.

We replatformed the entire operation onto Shopify Plus - and, crucially, kept retail and wholesale under one roof. Three regional stores (NZ, AU, US) each run a blended B2C and B2B experience from a single build, with pricing, tax and shipping handled per market and per customer type. Città's team can now merchandise, promote and launch on their own terms, while the ERP still runs the back office.

How we did it

strategy
  • Replatform from a legacy Adobe + Dynamics 365 stack to Shopify Plus, retaining Dynamics 365 as the ERP and source of truth via a purpose-built integration.
  • Solve the root data problem first: rebuild a flat, variant-less catalogue into a proper Shopify product-and-variant model with a Parent SKU, fixing search, pricing display and size filtering.
  • Run retail and wholesale as one “blended” store per region rather than separate builds - one theme, one codebase, audience-aware behaviour.
  • Localise by market - NZ, AU and US each settle in their own currency with the right tax, shipping and range - while keeping a single, consistent brand experience.
design
  • A clean, editorial, mobile-first design built on the Sleek theme, letting Città's product photography and considered aesthetic lead.
  • Modular, reusable content sections so the team can build campaigns and storytelling pages without developer help.
  • A refined shopping journey - mega menu, custom full-width search, quick view/quick add, filterable PLPs with landscape-image and inline-banner layouts, and a rich PDP with zoom, bundles, similar looks and collapsible detail.
  • A wholesale experience that feels like the retail site, not a stripped-back portal - trade pricing, order minimums and account status surfaced clearly for logged-in B2B customers.
development
  • Three regional Shopify Plus storefronts (NZ / AU / US), each a blended B2C + B2B build on Shopify 2.0.
  • Integration support with third-party partner HSO connecting Shopify to Microsoft Dynamics 365 - products, customers, companies, click & collect and gift cards all flowing through the integration rather than being manually migrated.
  • Custom B2B layer: manually-managed Shopify Catalogs driving tiered trade pricing, “Trade Price” labelling, per-market order minimums, backorders, EOQ (economic order quantity) buying, agreed-terms payment and account-status warning bars.
  • Custom commerce features: mini-cart with was/now pricing and free-shipping progress, stock-threshold-driven CTAs (Add to Cart / Notify Me / Enquire Now / Backorder), Enquire Now made-to-order flow, native click & collect, wishlist (Swym) and Klaviyo back-in-stock.
  • Fulfilment handled through StarShipIt: order splitting, dispatch and tracking sync across both the B2C and B2B stores - plus a custom B2B shipping app calling HSO middleware for live wholesale rates; GoSweetSpot, NZ Post and DHL as carriers.
  • Data migration limited by design to order history; technical SEO, 301 redirects, structured data and speed optimisation across the build.

The Challenge

Two businesses, one ageing storefront.

Città was running retail and wholesale through a legacy Adobe storefront tied to Microsoft Dynamics 365, and the seams were showing.

  • A flat, variant-less product model meant broken on-site search, pricing that only ever reflected one variant, and no way to filter by size.
  • Every promotion, campaign and content change leaned on developers and rigid templates, slowing the team down.
  • Wholesale was a first-class part of the business but had no first-class digital home: trade pricing, order minimums, backorders and account terms all needed to live online, per market.
  • Three markets (NZ, AU, US) each needed their own currency, tax treatment, shipping and range - without fragmenting the brand or doubling the build.
  • A hard dependency on a third-party ERP integration meant the storefront had to be built to spec, ahead of real data, and ready the moment the integration landed.

The Solution

One Shopify Plus build for retail and wholesale, across three markets.

We rebuilt Città on Shopify Plus as three regional, blended storefronts - retail and wholesale served from a single, audience-aware build.

  • A proper product-and-variant catalogue with a Parent SKU model, fixing search, pricing and filtering at the source.
  • Retail experience rebuilt mobile-first on Sleek: mega menu, custom full-width search, filterable PLPs, and a rich PDP with image zoom, bundles, similar looks, click & collect and Klaviyo back-in-stock.
  • A full wholesale layer in the same store - tiered trade pricing via Shopify Catalogs, “Trade Price” labelling, per-market order minimums, backorders, EOQ buying, agreed-terms payment and account-status warnings - live at b2b.citta.com.
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 retained as the ERP, integrated to Shopify (via partner HSO) for products, customers, companies, gift cards and click & collect.
  • Modular content sections, native promotions and Launchpad scheduling handing day-to-day merchandising and campaigns back to Città's team.
  • Localised currency, tax and shipping per region - fulfilment via StarShipIt (order splitting + dispatch), with GoSweetSpot, NZ Post and DHL as carriers - plus technical SEO, 301 redirects and speed work across the build.
